Lady Jays hit rough stretch in February

After starting off the season by winning 13 of their first 16 games, the Hopkins women's basketball team has not been able to sustain their winning ways as the team lost two games in a row against Muhlenberg and McDaniel. To the team's dismay, the stretch of losses continued after facing off against Swarthmore on Jan. 30. The Lady Jays were simply not able to match the firepower of the surging Garnet as Haverford downed Hopkins by a score of 75-47. Two seniors on Haverford, Katie Lytie and Ellie Larson, notched 20 points a piece as the Garnet held onto the lead for the rest of the game halfway through the first half.

Wrestling splits against Stevens and Ursinus

The Hopkins wrestling team began their most important month of the season this past weekend with a dual meet split with two nationally ranked Centennial Conference opponents. The Blue Jays, who hosted the tri-match at Goldfarb Gymnasium, started their Saturday with a narrow victory over 29th ranked Stevens Institute of Technology 21-19. In their second match of the day against 20th ranked Ursinus College, Hopkins was not able to maintain its early lead over the Bears en route to a 24-6 defeat. At the end of the day, the dual split brought the Jays record to 7-4 overall and an impressive 4-1 in the Centennial Conference.

Parson, Shelton leading Women’s Track

The Hopkins women’s track and field team went into this weekend’s race at Bucknell University ranked tenth in the nation. After their impressive performances this weekend, the team should only improve in the rankings. The Blue Jays had many top performances and now have runners in the top 10 in the conference in every track event from the 60-meter dash to the 5k. When asked how the team was able to be competitive in every event, sophomore Alex Popkin said it is due to their commitment and hard work.

Hopkins runs to top DIII team at Bucknell

After a week of hard work and preparation, the Hopkins men’s track team hiked to Bucknell University to take part in the 16th Annual Bison Open. This was a two-day event that closed out January and kicked off February for the Blue Jays.

Relaxed atmosphere benefits Lady Jays

On Jan. 31, the fourth-ranked Hopkins women’s swimming traveled to Fredericksburg, Va. for a dual meet with Mary Washington. It was the team’s final dual meet, finishing at 6-2 on the season.

Hopkins Basketball tested by Haverford

The Hopkins men’s basketball team has endured a hard fought season against tough Centennial Conference opponents. However, they've battled through and currently hold an impressive record of 7-4 in conference play. Although the Jays are in a good position, the team knows that all opponents in the conference are a threat; that reminder was seen in full force on Saturday, as the Blue Jays travelled to rival Haverford for a rivalry matchup against the Fords.

Super Bowl Preview: Offense or Defense?

What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? This is the first question that comes to mind when the high-octane Denver Bronco’s offense faces off against the top ranked Seattle defense. Super Bowl XLVIII will showcase the brilliance of Peyton Manning and the Denver receiving core against the star-studded Seahawks defense, led by the talented and boisterous Richard Sherman.

Poore, Carey set records at Haverford Invite

Last weekend, the men’s track team set out to Haverford, Pa. to take part in the Haverford Invitational. The team had high hopes going into their final competition before the start of the second semester. The day surely lived up to their expectations.

Athlete of the Week: Jimmy Hammer - Men's Basketball

The Hopkins men’s basketball team rode an already hot January (5-2) into their annual Wall-O’Mahony game against Muhlenberg College. With two straight wins over Ursinus and Washington College, the Blue Jays looked to extend their winning streak against the Mules.

Lady Jays take three of five in tournament

This past Saturday, the Hopkins Lady Jays participated in the Philadelphia Invitational Fencing Tournament, emerging with a 3-2 record. The team defeated Drew, Haverford, and Lafayette, but fell to tough defeats against #7 Northwestern and #9 Temple.

W. Basketball falls to Mules in final seconds

While many of us were home relaxing over break, the Blue Jays women’s basketball team was dedicating hard work and time to stay sharp on the court. They had good reason for this as they went into the break with a 7-2 overall record and were undefeated against conference teams. Thanks to the team’s success before the break, players were motivated to stay in shape so they could continue their dominance with their return.

Fencing cruises to several victories

Intersession involved many victories for the Hopkins men’s fencing team. At the 2013 Hopkins Invitational in November, Hopkins earned wins over Army, Hunter and Yeshiva. At the Brandeis Invitational on Dec. 16, the team beat Boston College for their fourth straight win. Sophomores Mark Zimmermann and John Petrie led Hopkins in the Epee and Foil, respectively. They each achieved their 100th win of their careers.

Blue Jays shine in the New Year

Before winter break brought a four week break from games, the Hopkins men’s basketball team had an overall 4-5 record and a conference record of 2-2. Returning to practice on Dec. 29 was not ideal for the men, however it proved to be the right call, as the men hit the court on Jan. 3, exactly one month since their last game. Suffering a tough loss against Case Western provided the right incentive to spark a three game win streak, having two of those wins coming from conference matchups. The men were now 4-2 in conference and were showing potential as true conference contenders as they traveled to Carlisle, Pa. to take on the Red Devils of Dickinson College.

Mixture of young and old propels Wrestling

For the Hopkins wrestling team, the 2013-2014 season was a new beginning for everyone involved in the program. After a stellar season last year that saw the program produce All-American Paul Marcello, this season was a time for new people to fill into more prominent roles. As with all Hopkins sports teams though, the most important expectation for the season was team success; with the wrestling program, that expectation is always present.
