On Oct. 6, the NBA announced the much anticipated, lucrative national TV deals with ESPN and TNT that will come into effect for the 2016-2017 season. The new deals, which last through the 2024-2025 season, will pay the NBA $2.66 billion annually, a massive increase that triples the $930 million of the current deal.
Coming on the heels of a dominant winning streak, the Hopkins women’s soccer team traveled to Collegeville, Pa. to face off against Ursinus this past Saturday in a Centennial Conference showdown.
In continuation of what has been an up and down season, the Hopkins women’s field hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss to Ursinus this past Saturday at Homewood Field. The loss lowers the team’s record to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in conference. The Lady Jays have been inconsistent as they have yet to string together a streak of more than two wins in a row.
The official spring tennis season has not yet begun and already, a Blue Jay athlete has made history. Sophomore Ashnaa Rao of the Hopkins women's tennis team won three straight matches in a span of three days to secure the National Small College Singles Championship and even earned a spot in the dubbed ‘Super Bowl’ Championship on the following day.
On a beautiful, crisp fall Saturday morning, the Hopkins men’s tennis team welcomed Amherst to nearby Morgan State University for a matchup that featured the defending Division III national champions in Amherst and the seventh-seeded Jays. The match proved to be the most highly contested of the Jays brief fall season, as Hopkins pushed the Lord Jeffs to the brink before falling 5-4. The match was one of the longest that the Jays have played this season, as the doubles and singles brackets combined to take over four hours long.
The Hopkins men’s water polo team won in sensational fashion this past weekend as they beat the George Washington Colonials 15-13 in CWPA Southern Division competitive play.
On Saturday, the Hopkins men's and women's cross country teams raced in the Paul Short Invitational, a prestigious tournament with a competitive field of many of the nation's most elite runners. The meet was split into three races: Gold, Brown and White, with Gold being the most competitive. Both the men's and women's teams competed in the Gold race, finishing 30th and 10th, respectively.
The Blue Jay football team kept its regular season success rolling on Saturday, as they steamrolled Juniata 56-14, scoring touchdowns on six of its first seven possessions. Saturday’s game marked the 39th time Hopkins has emerged victorious in its last 40 regular season games.
On a cool Friday night, the Lady Jays field hockey team took the field with the goal of attaining a winning record in the Centennial Conference. Although the weekend came with many distractions, the Lady Jays maintained unfaltering focus on the goal at hand. Swarthmore came into the game with a 0-3 Centennial Conference record and looked to upset Hopkins on its home turf. The Lady Jays, coming off of two losses themselves, prepared to attack the weakened foe.
As we enter the sixth weekend of college football, conversation about the Heisman has begun, teams have already accomplished tremendous upsets and the season is barely a month old. This week, we will delve into the top five college football programs in the country.
Over the weekend, the Hopkins men’s soccer team fell to Dickinson in a hard-fought 90 minutes. There were many ups and downs in action throughout the game coming from two teams that have a combined 13 wins this season.
Over the weekend, the Hopkins water polo team traveled to California to compete in the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament, in which the Jays played four of the nation’s top 10 teams in all of D-III. Although Hopkins dropped three of four, they beat the fourth-ranked team in the country, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 15-10 before falling to Whittier in the final game of the weekend.

This past weekend, the Hopkins women’s volleyball team headed to Swarthmore College for a pair of matches against stiff competition. In the early afternoon session against the host squad, the Lady Jays had a 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth set before dropping the final two sets against a tough Swarthmore team. In the late afternoon portion of the competition, the Lady Jays were able to respond and dominate against Neumann en route to a decisive 3-0 victory. With the split, Hopkins evened their record to a 10-10 on the season, while the loss to Swarthmore dropped them to 1-2 in Centennial Conference play. However, the Lady Jays established a lead and offered a fierce challenge to one of the top teams in the conference. Swarthmore now sits at 11-4 on the season, including an unblemished 4-0 record within the Centennial.
Riding the momentum of a six-game win streak, the women’s volleyball team dropped its second home game of the season to conference rivals Muhlenberg by a score of 3-1. The loss lowers the Lady Jays to a 9-9 record.
On the last weekend of September, the Hopkins men’s tennis team traveled down to Fredericksburg, Va. to compete in the ITA Southeast Regional tournament.
The Hopkins men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled to Boston this past Friday to compete in the Boston College Coast-to-Coast Invitational. The men’s team took home a respectable 14th place with 408 points, while the women’s side finished 16th with 389 points. It was an admirable showing for both sides, who were facing some of the steepest competition they will meet all season.
The Lady Jays were back in action this past Saturday as the women’s field hockey team looked to remain undefeated in conference play. The Jays traveled to Pennsylvania to play the Muhlenberg Mules in both teams’ second game of the conference. The away side went in with a 4-4 overall record, which included a 1-0 record in the conference. Despite a strong start in the CC, the Jays knew this game would present a different challenge.
After struggling at the beginning of the season, the Hopkins women’s soccer team has been on a tear. The Lady Jays extended their impressive winning streak to six after dominating the Muhlenberg Mules early and often en route to a 3-0 triumph. The Lady Jays earned their second conference victory to remain undefeated in conference play. Additionally, the team has won 33 of their last 35 Centennial Conference matchups and improved their overall season record to 8-2-0.
In this week’s edition, we are lucky enough to have two featured athletes deserving of the Athlete of the Week honors. Sophomores Michael Buxbaum and Emerson Walsh recently cruised to an impressive victory at the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional Tournament this past weekend. Buxbaum, a tennis star from North Wales, Pa. played 11 matches over the course of a grueling three days, including four matches on the last day of the tournament to additionally earn the Singles title. Meanwhile, he and Walsh combined for the doubles victory to cap off what could only be described as an excellent and successful weekend for the Hopkins men’s tennis program. Both players earned the distinction of All-American due to their impressive play and additionally have earned the honor of Athlete of the Week.
