Don’t worry everyone, we made it. The NBA season is finally upon us. No longer do we have to keep rewatching House of Highlights clips on Instagram of our various favorite NBA stars. There will no longer be tired conversations of last year’s regular season, playoffs or Finals. Another glorious 1,230 NBA games are on tap to begin this week, and there are a ridiculous number of reasons to be excited.
The Hopkins volleyball team traveled to Swarthmore, Pa. on Saturday to play a pair of key late-season matches. The first was a Centennial Conference tilt against the Swarthmore College Garnet and the latter a non-Conference matchup against the Vassar College Brewers. Both matches proved to be challenging for the Blue Jays, but the ultimate results were undeniably gratifying.
Once again, college basketball fans find themselves subjected to an endless stream of scandals. The long-awaited corruption trial began last week and a flood of information, upsetting yet expected, has flowed out. Three Adidas employees are the defendants accused of wire fraud. Since what they did, paying a student to play basketball, is not a crime, they are being charged with a related crime called wire fraud.
This past Saturday, the 17th-ranked field hockey team traveled to the Swarthmore College Garnet. The trip was worth the two-hour, early-morning drive as the Blue Jays came home with another Centennial Conference victory. Along with the team’s dominant offensive efforts, the Hopkins defense kept the Garnet at zero successful shots, as the final score read 4-0.
Last year, the women’s soccer team lost to the Swarthmore College Garnet in the finals of the Centennial Conference Playoffs on their very own Homewood Field, and the fallen Blue Jays had to watch their opponents rush the field and hold up the Championship trophy.
This weekend the Hopkins water polo team traveled across the country to Claremont, Calif. to participate in the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament, where they would face off against the other top Division III teams.
The Hopkins women’s field hockey team handed Muhlenberg College its first loss of the year in the Centennial Conference this past Saturday afternoon at Scotty Wood Stadium in Allentown, Pa.
On Saturday, Hopkins traveled to Franklin & Marshall College (F&M) in Lancaster, Pa. to take on the Diplomats, a team against which they carried a five-game winning streak. Both teams entered the Oct. 6 matchup boasting 4-1 records on the season.
Last weekend both the men’s and women’s swim teams traveled just down the road to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), as they had a dual-meet, racing against two Division I competitors: the UMBC Golden Retrievers and the University of Delaware Blue Hens.
This past weekend the Hopkins women’s soccer team defeated the Muhlenberg College Mules, 1-0, and has yet to lose a Centennial Conference matchup. The victory marked the fourth consecutive shutout for the Blue Jays and improved their record to 11-1 on the season.
I’m going to make a statement that may seem bold, but to those that have had the privilege of being a part of it know that it rings true: There is nothing in this world that compares to Hopkins football.
The latest controversy plaguing the NFL is not about the national anthem, cheating or off the field issues. Instead it’s about a rule change. “Roughing the passer” is the name given to the penalty when a player tackles a quarterback too aggressively in an inappropriate manner.
The Hopkins men’s soccer team had a busy week, first travelling to Allentown, Pa. to take on the Muhlenberg College Mules in a Centennial Conference matchup and then hosting the No. 1 ranked team in the country, the Messiah College Falcons. Hopkins was able to even up their Centennial Conference record with a 1-0 win over Muhlenberg on Saturday, thanks to the first goal of the season from junior defender Connor Jacobs.
The MLB postseason is now underway, which means that it is the most exciting time of year for those who love to watch America’s Pastime. I will certainly enjoy watching October baseball, and am eager to see which team will ultimately raise the Commissioner’s Trophy at the end of the World Series. However, this time around, it will be difficult for me to appreciate the end of the season to the extent that I normally would.
The 16th-ranked Hopkins volleyball team brought home a double victory in a busy week that saw them face-off against the Stevenson University Mustangs on Thursday, Sept. 27 and the Fords of Haverford College on Saturday. They dropped just one set over the three-day period.
Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a cowboy, through and through. I may not have moved to Texas until I was seven, but I come from strong country stock. I love to say ridiculous things like hootenanny and y’all’ll. My senior prom was in a barn. I own a cowboy hat signed by Mike Lee and Justin McBride, two world-famous bull riders.
This past weekend, both the men’s and women’s tennis teams traveled away from Hopkins to close out their fall seasons. To start, the women headed to Loyola University to participate in the Loyola Invitational.
The Hopkins football team’s regular season consists of only 10 games. This in effect makes every matchup a must-win game if the team is to legitimately contend for a postseason berth.
The 17th-ranked field hockey team continues to prove its dominance in the Centennial Conference as it defeated the Haverford College Fords with two first-half goals on Saturday. Although the Fords made the game close in the second half, the Blue Jays finished out the game strong defensively, resulting in a 2-1 final score.
Women’s soccer continued their hot run, winning both of their matchups last week. This past Saturday, they defeated the Washington College Shorewomen by way of 4-1. The victory pushed the Jays’ win streak to five games, as they have not lost since they played Messiah College on Sept. 5.
