Win or lose, the Blue Jay football team’s game against the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Engineers last Saturday would be one for the record books. Hopkins was playing in its second-ever NCAA Division III Quarterfinal game, and its first on Homewood Field. However, the Jays were not going to settle, and they had their sights set on something even bigger: a spot in the semifinals.
This past Friday a video from February came out of Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt shoving and kicking a woman in what appears to be a hotel hallway. The NFL immediately put Hunt on the Commissioner’s Exempt List, meaning he is not allowed to play in any games until a further investigation is completed. The Chiefs cut Hunt later in the day, saying they had asked Hunt about the incident when it first happened and he denied it happened.
In what has become one of the most intense rivalries in the Centennial Conference, last Thursday night, the Hopkins men’s basketball team took on the Swarthmore College Garnet in Goldfarb Gymnasium. The last time the two teams met, it was in the Conference Championship, where the Blue Jays took down the Garnet at Swarthmore to claim the Conference Championship. The last time the two teams met in Goldfarb, the game went to double overtime and was eventually decided by a three-pointer by now senior guard Michael Gardner with eight seconds left to win the game 93-91.
The regular season is done, the Conference Championships have been decided and we’re one Army vs. Navy game away from officially entering the postseason of the college football season. Bowl Selection Sunday has concluded, and now 70 teams will prepare for their upcoming games.
Last Tuesday, the Hopkins women’s basketball team continued to blaze through its schedule with a win over the McDaniel College Green Terror, extending its undefeated run.
The Hopkins men’s basketball team picked up two wins this past week against the McDaniel College Green Terror and the Marymount University Saints. The scores were 77-61 and 57-41, respectively.
2018 was a magical year for the Hopkins field hockey team. At every turn, it seemed that the Blue Jays were rewriting their own record book, only to rewrite it again just weeks later. All good things must come to an end, however, and the most successful season in Hopkins field hockey history ended in the Final Four as the No. 9 Jays fell to the No. 4 Tufts University Jumbos.
The biggest story of the NBA season so far has come from the best possible place. No, it isn’t that 76ers former No. 1 pick Markelle Fultz is now seemingly unable to make free throws. No, it is not that forward Kawhi Leonard has returned to his former glory and has established himself as a top three two-way player once again. And it definitely is not that the Los Angeles Clippers are currently leading the Western Conference as I am writing this.
In the 2017 NBA draft, Markelle Fultz was widely believed to be the best prospect available. He was drafted first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers and has been with the team ever since. Fultz’s transition to the NBA, however, has not been a great one.
After two rounds of playoff competition, only the elite Division-III football teams remain in contention for a National Championship. Heading into December, the Blue Jays are scorching hot, and neither their opponents nor the frigid weather are showing any ability to cool them off.
Despite losing in the Centennial Conference Championship, the No. 8-ranked Hopkins women’s soccer team was granted the opportunity to host the first and second rounds of the Division III NCAA Tournament this past weekend.
On Saturday, the Hopkins men’s soccer team played in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against the Washington and Lee University Generals. The Blue Jays battled to pull out a victory in penalty kicks against the Generals, and moved on to the next round the next day. In a heartbreaking loss on Sunday, Hopkins had its postseason run ended after a hard-fought battle against top-ranked Messiah College.
This weekend, the Hopkins volleyball team traveled up to Wellesley, Mass. for the NCAA tournament. The Blue Jays opened the tournament against the Eastern University Eagles, a team they faced twice during the regular season. In the first matchup of the regular season, the Blue Jays came out on top of a five-set match, but Eastern got its revenge later in the season with a victory in straight sets.
Well, there was finally a resolution to the Jimmy Butler saga, and I don’t think that it was the resolution that anyone expected. Or wanted, for that matter. I believe from a purely entertainment standpoint, we would have loved to continue to hear stories about Butler mentally breaking Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns or how the Timberwolves rejected another tantalizing trade offer.
One of the best wide receivers in the NFL only a few years ago, Dez Bryant had been a free agent for the entirety of the season until Nov. 7 when he agreed to a single-year contract with the New Orleans Saints. The three-time Pro Bowl star was released by the Dallas Cowboys last year, the team he had been playing for since 2010.
The Hopkins field hockey team experienced great success throughout the regular season and the Centennial Conference Tournament. Thus far, the NCAA Tournament has been much of the same. The team began its quest to win a National Championship this past weekend in Grantham, Pa.
Imagine you’re a resident of the great city of Seattle, the pride of the Pacific Northwest. Oh, and it’s 2008. Your favorite basketball team, the Seattle SuperSonics, just had an awful season, finishing 20-62. But it is okay, because it’s 2008, and your team just drafted Kevin Durant a year ago, who averaged 20.3 PPG and won the NBA Rookie of the Year. Also, Lil Wayne’s The Carter III just came out, so you’re encouraged about the future as a whole.
This past weekend, the Hopkins volleyball team swept their way through the Centennial Conference Tournament. On Saturday, Hopkins defeated the Swarthmore Garnet in the semifinals and, on Sunday, they beat the McDaniel Green Terror, taking home the school’s third consecutive Conference Championship. The Jays completely dominated the competition, winning each set by an average of almost 10 points.
This past weekend, the women’s swim team traveled across town to nearby Loyola University to compete in the annual Thomas Murphy Invitational. Four schools arrived at the Mangione Pool, including West Chester University, Drexel Univeristy, Loyola University and our very own Blue Jays.
