Last month the California State Senate unanimously passed SB 206, also known as the Fair Pay to Play Act. Last week Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill into act, creating a rippling wave of implications for the future of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
In a heated battle between Centennial Conference rivals, the Hopkins women’s soccer team played to their second straight draw, this time in a road outing against the Haverford College Fords.
Almost every country in the world has its own soccer league, and in every league there are teams surviving only on the heartfelt support of their local fans. Some teams, however, thrive not only on the fans from the area but fans from across the world.
The Hopkins volleyball team was looking to make history this past Saturday, as they headed up to southeastern Pennsylvania for a two-game slate. The team was traveling with a 15 game unbeaten streak to start the season, one win shy of the program record. To break the record they had to defeat their conference foes, the Haverford College Fords and the Arcadia University Knights.
Jennifer S. Baker was promoted to the role of director of athletics and recreation in August after her predecessor Alanna W. Shanahan became the new vice provost for student affairs. Baker was previously the senior associate director of athletics and had been in that role since 2017. She is the fifth person to hold the role since 1950.
A couple of weeks ago, a wildly irritating clip appeared on Twitter from the early morning ESPN talk show “Get Up!” Noted ESPN and SEC pundit Paul Finebaum lambasted injured Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton for his performance this season. The 2015 MVP had been underperforming due to a mild Lisfranc sprain in his left foot that he suffered during the preseason and arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in the offseason.
The Hopkins volleyball team walked into Huntingdon, Pa. this past weekend with their eyes on maintaining their impressive undefeated record. The Jays had three matches on Friday and Saturday, facing the No. 8 ranked Juniata College Eagles on Friday, and the unranked Saint Vincent College Bearcats and University of Rochester Yellow Jackets on Saturday.
On Saturday, the Hopkins football team played in Carlisle, Pa. against the Dickinson Red Devils. Hopkins was ranked 18th going into the game. In the previous 12 meetings between these two teams, Hopkins had won all 12.
The Hopkins field hockey team has proven time and time again this season that they are a force to be reckoned with. This weekend was no exception. For the Jays 2019 Centennial Conference debut, the Jays traveled to Chestertown, Md. to duke it out on Washington College’s home field. Hopkins field hockey would emerge from the contest not only victorious, but with a new record for the highest scoring game this season after defeating the Shorewomen 8-1.
There are three certainties in October: The leaves will change color, the temperature will fall and the MLB Playoffs will be on. Before the playoffs officially get underway, however, the Wild Card rounds must be played out.
It’s impressive enough to be undefeated, but it’s even more impressive when your undefeated run has won its 14 straight matches by a margin of 42 sets to six. Hopkins women’s volleyball has been a powerhouse in the Centennial Conference the past three years, winning the conference crown in all three years and amassing a record of 68-21 during that time.
The No. 9 Hopkins men’s soccer team continued their strong season this weekend as they traveled to Pennsylvania to take on the Gettysburg College Bullets. This was an exciting Saturday night matchup of Centennial Conference foes.
On Friday, Sept. 20 the men’s and women’s cross-country teams travelled to Bronx, N.Y. to compete in the Iona Meet of Champions.
If you haven’t heard yet, the Hopkins volleyball team is very good. Hopkins won both games in tournament play this weekend, pushing them to 11-0 on the year.
The Hopkins football team returned with a vengeance after their disappointing upset to Susquehanna University last week with a massive blowout victory against Moravian College, defeating their fellow Centennial Conference members by a score of 41-0. The Jays held the Greyhounds to only 132 total yards of offense the whole game and dominated from the first touchdown to the fifth.

Todd Gurley is the worst. Not only did he reset an already saturated running back market with a landmark contract that included $21.9 million guaranteed, but he also accidentally created a completely new term for getting paid and it’s absolutely ridiculous: Gurley money.
The Hopkins women’s soccer team had their long-awaited home opener for the 2019 season this past Saturday. They hosted their Centennial Conference foe, the Bryn Mawr Owls, who traveled down to Baltimore so the Jays could open their Conference slate.
The old saying goes, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight; it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” Next to that saying should be a picture of junior Ryan Hubley, a five-foot-seven, 165-pound wide receiver who has made his presence felt on the Hopkins football program and on any opposing defense that tries to cover him.
The short: Oof. The Jays were up 24-7 with just over 12 minutes left in the game. They lost 28-27. Hopkins now stands at 1-1 with an 0-1 conference record.
