Members of the Baltimore community discuss activism and resilience at TEDxJHU Main Event

TEDxJHU held its Spring Main Event, titled “Amplified,” on April 2. The event hosted speakers from the Baltimore area, including activist Legacy Forte, neuroscientist David Linden, artist Hannah Brancato, author D. Watkins and educator Melanie Shimano. Hopkins hip-hop dance group SLAM performed, and the student-produced short film The People of Baltimore was presented during intermission.

Panelists discuss universal voting at SNF Agora event

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Agora Institute hosted a conversation with E.J. Dionne and Miles Rapoport on March 29 to discuss their new book 100% Democracy: The Case for Universal Voting. The conversation was moderated by Students Learn Students Vote Coalition (SLVC) Executive Director Clarissa Unger.

The Committee on Student Elections (CSE) announced the results of the 2022-2023 Student Government Association (SGA) Executive Board and class council elections on earlier this month. Three out of the four executive board positions were uncontested.

University leaders launch the second Roadmap on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

The University launched Realizing Our Promise: The Second JHU Roadmap on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion with a virtual kickoff event on March 11, bringing several speakers to discuss the goals and initiatives of the Roadmap. This Roadmap is the second stage of the University's mission to incorporate diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) into the core framework of the institution.

SGA Exec. Board candidates discuss their platforms

Elections for the Executive Board of the 2022-23 Student Government Association (SGA) include a single ticket and three independent candidates. For the third year, the Executive Board election will coincide with SGA class council elections. Voting begins on Monday, March 14 and runs through Thursday, March 17.

Candidates for the Student Government Association (SGA) Executive Board discussed their platforms at a debate on March 10. Juniors Breanna Soldatelli, Raymond Perez and Karen He are running for executive president. Sophomore Kobi Khong is running for executive vice president, freshman Kya Nicholson is running for executive treasurer and sophomore Elaina Regier is running for executive secretary.

Ukrainian and Russian affiliates react to Russian invasion of Ukraine

President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in an effort to force Ukraine into the Russian sphere of influence on Feb. 24, local time. Since Feb. 24, thousands in Ukraine have been killed and at least 2 million Ukrainians have fled their country.

Students claim discrimination led to their dismissal from School of Education Clinical Mental Health Counseling program

Mental health counselors generally espouse the value of compassion. However,  several students dismissed from the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at the School of Education have raised concerns that discrimination on the basis of their disability and/or minority statuses contributed to their dismissals from the program.

University changes masking policy and announces spring break travel testing requirements

In two email broadcasts sent to affiliates on Mar. 9, the University announced relaxations of the indoor masking policy for vaccinated affiliates and a spring break travel testing requirement. Effective immediately, masks are no longer required in administrative spaces, public events, research labs, athletic facilities, libraries, residence halls and other public nonclassroom communal spaces.
