Robert Watkins breaks down Winter’s Bone

The Center for Advanced Media Studies; the Program for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality and the Political Science Department collaborated to host “Politics, Family and Precarity Cinema in Winter’s Bone” in Mergenthaler Hall on Friday.


Hampdenfest draws over 20,000 attendees

Hampdenfest 2014, an event held annually on The Avenue, brought between 20,000 and 30,000 visitors to Hampden on Saturday. The event featured toilet races, live music performances and a “Hampden’s Got Talent” karaoke competition. Numerous local vendors were also in attendance, offering a wide range of food and drink, art, jewelry and information about local groups.


Greek Week meets mixed student reviews

This year, Greek Week took place from Sept. 16 to 20, and it underwent significant changes following the departure of Rachel Drennen, former coordinator of Greek Life and Orientation.




Hopkins Raas dance celebrates Navratri

Hopkins Raas 2014, a celebration of the Hindu festival of Navratri through music and dance, took place in the Glass Pavilion in Levering Hall on Sept. 20 from 6:30 p.m. until 11 p.m. The Indian Graduate Students’ Association (IGSA), the Hopkins Bengali Organization (HBO), the JHU Hindu Students Council (HSC) and South Asian Students at Hopkins (SASH) jointly coordinated the event. A diverse crowd of students, Indian and non-Indian alike, gathered on an open Dandiya Raas and Garba dance floor, feasted on a catered buffet of Indian delicacies and experienced a night of exuberant celebration.


John Waters signs copies of novel Carsick at bookstore

On Sept. 22, John Waters visited the Johns Hopkins Barnes & Noble to sign Carsick, his newest novel. In a line stretching to the back of the store, patrons of all ages waited with copies of the book in hand to meet the award-winning author, director, screenwriter, actor and Baltimore native.







BASICS program to focus on alcohol intervention

In conjunction with the University’s efforts to curb student alcohol abuse, the Center for Health Education and Wellness (CHEW) and the Office of Residential Life have teamed up to introduce the Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) program.


Anti-rape products invoke discourse

In response to the national focus on curbing sexual assault on college campuses, products meant to deter sexual assault, such as Undercover Colors drug-detecting nail polish, LifeShel smartphone cases and Vive bracelets, have been gaining attention and criticism.


CNN president Zucker chats with students

Jeff Zucker, the president of CNN Worldwide and former president and CEO of NBC Universal, discussed his career over breakfast with a small group of Hopkins students and faculty on Sept. 11.


Baltimore honors 200 years of national anthem

On Sept. 14, Old St. Paul’s Church in downtown Baltimore commemorated both the Battle of Baltimore and the publishing of “The Star Spangled Banner” with a program titled “Singing on Key:  A Concert to Celebrate our National Anthem.”  About 200 people were present at this event.



Security Week returns to promote student safety

Last week, Campus Safety and Security organized activities and events to promote safety at Homewood. Starting on Sept. 9 and ending on Sept. 12, Campus Security officers were out on different quads encouraging students to sign up for the city-wide crime watch program, and to learn about safety around campus.
