The Hopkins wrestling team hosted the first annual Bradlee’s Bash on April 23 in memory of Bradlee LaMontagne, who passed away in 2020. The outdoor event that reflected Bradlee’s love for spikeball, ice cream and spending time with friends outside.

The Phoenix Suns, the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) only 60-win team and prohibitive favorite to make the finals, are tied 2-2 with the New Orleans Pelicans in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. The Pelicans were the nine seed and had to fight their way into the playoffs via the play-in tournament.

The Hopkins baseball team swept the Franklin and Marshall (F&M) College Diplomats in a doubleheader at home on April 16. The Blue Jays trailed in the bottom of the sixth inning 6-3; however, junior left fielder Matthew Cooper hit a monster home run to gain the team’s winning point with a final score of 7-6.

Baltimore has a lot to offer and for Hopkins students, there is no shortage of things to do. Inner Harbor especially is always buzzing with new events and venues but one remains constant. Home to the Baltimore Orioles, Oriole Park at Camden Yards is a hotspot for many, and as summer begins to roll in, spending an afternoon watching a baseball game is a great way to relax and spend time with friends.

Hopkins men’s lacrosse faced off against the Pennsylvania State University Nittany Lions on the stormy Saturday evening of April 16. The Blue Jays proved too much for Penn State, recording a 13-10 victory for their second win in the Big Ten.

Graduate student Annie Gutierrez finished off a successful two weeks with a new personal record (PR) in the 400-meter hurdles with a national top-30 time of 1:05.87 at the Mason Spring Invitational this past weekend. She also broke her own school record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.57 at the Towson Invitational, ranking third in program history.

Women’s lacrosse went head-to-head against the Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers for the first time ever on April 10. The Jays proved to be too much for the Chanticleers, cruising to a 16-8 victory.

The 2021-2022 NBA Season has officially come to an end, and for the first time in years the basketball community is in disaccord. In the past two years, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award and the Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) were pretty straightforward for most fans, reporters and voters alike. This season, however, the parity is at an all-time high. Multiple people have a legitimate claim to virtually every single award, and the playoffs are almost certain to be legendary.

Recently, the MVP candidacy for Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns has gained momentum in the media. Fellow NBA players and coaches agree that he is one of the most disrespected players in the league. For years he was considered an empty scorer because he was on a team without a winning record. Now the narrative has changed to Chris Paul being the key piece to the Suns' success. Constant narratives around the league downplay Booker’s effectiveness as a player.

Hopkins men’s tennis defeated the 17th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University Tartans 5-4 on April 3, with sophomore Thomas Yu clinching the match with a dominant win at first singles.

Women’s lacrosse faced off against the eighth-ranked University of Maryland Terrapins last Saturday. Hopkins entered the game ranked 20th in the nation with a 6-5 record.

Junior Sachin Mehta capped off a successful junior campaign at the NCAA Championships this past weekend. Among Division-I competition, the junior sabrist placed 21st, the best finish in this discipline at the NCAA Championships by a Hopkins fencer since 1980.

We are smack dab in the middle of the offseason, and with the National Football League (NFL) draft coming up at the end of April, teams are scrambling to make trades and sign free agents. This past offseason, Tripp Myers was working on his swing in batting practice. It was nothing out of the ordinary for his routine, but he went through a stretch, as every baseball player does, where he was struggling to hit the ball. It was then that hitting coach Adam Schlenoff advised Myers to simplify his swing.

After another busy week of back-to-back games, the Hopkins Blue Jays now hold a record of 5-3, losing two of the three games played over the weekend and winning one later on in the week. Over the weekend, two of those games were against the University of Southern Maine Huskies, where each team took a win. The Jays then fell 0-3 to the eighth-ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls.

After a blowout win against Swarthmore College in the Centennial Conference championship game, Hopkins advanced on to the NCAA Division-III Men’s Basketball Tournament, which ultimately ended in a heartbreaking loss to Stockton University in the second round.
