In the first outdoor competition of the 2017 season, the men and women of the Hopkins track & field team recorded numerous personal bests and Conference-leading times despite the horrific wind conditions, intense rains and tornado warnings that delayed many of the races late into the night.

This past weekend, the Hopkins baseball team opened Centennial Conference play with a double-header against the Swarthmore Garnet. In two riveting games, the Jays were able to cinch two crucial victories; They shut out the Garnet in game one to win 5-0 and maintained their momentum to take game two in a close 5-4 matchup.

After a 10 a.m. alumni match, the No. 15 ranked Hopkins women’s tennis team fought through the inevitable fatigue to sweep the Bryn Mawr Owls and the No. 24 ranked Christopher Newport Captains.

Last week, the Blue Jays headed down to sunny Fort Myers, Florida to compete in the 2017 Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. With eight consecutive days of games, including a couple doubleheaders, every Jay was able to see considerable time on the field. Hopkins returned to Baltimore Saturday night with an 8-3 record in Fort Myers and a 14-5 record for their season thus far.

The men and women of the Blue Jays’ swim team kicked off their spring break with a trip down to Shenandoah, Texas for the 2017 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The competition kicked off on Thursday, March 16, with the first of many outstanding All-American performances for the Jays.

The North Carolina Tar Heels, the Oregon Ducks, the Gonzaga Bulldogs and the South Carolina Gamecocks all battled adversity, staved off injury and fought relentlessly for a shot at making it to Glendale, Arizona. The four remaining teams appear capable of giving us one of the more intriguing Final Fours in recent memory.

With all 30 teams playing fewer than 10 games in the regular season, the playoff picture is already beginning to take shape. But what might be most noticeable to NHL fans is the absence of a certain team from the playoff picture: the Detroit Red Wings. This season brings an end to the Red Wings 25-year playoff streak.

It was an exciting week for the men’s swim team. The Jays travelled to Shenandoah, Texas for the NCAA Championships. The long four days of competition were filled with a number of record-breaking performances, close standings and even tighter races. However, the Jays made it onto the podium, placing fourth just behind the Emory University Eagles, the Kenyon College Lords and the Denison University Big Red.

While most Blue Jays were getting ready to fly the coop for spring break, the men of the Hopkins lacrosse team were hard at work, battling against Atlantic Coast Conference foes, the Syracuse University Orange and the University of Virginia Cavaliers. Driven to the brink on both occasions, the Jays split two overtime matchups, with a loss to the Orange and a victory over the Cavaliers. This brings their record to 5-3.

First up is the East Region where the defending champions, the Villanova University Wildcats, are the number one seed. The committee did not do the overall number one seed any favors, as the Wildcats have a treacherous road to the Final Four. They could face a top tier opponent as early as the Round of 32, with the absurdly under-seeded University of Wisconsin Badgers only one win away from a second round matchup with the Wildcats.

The Hopkins men’s baseball team looked to continue their scorching start to the season after a fresh a pair of victories over number one ranked Cortland State and number two ranked Keystone College. The 5-1 Jays entered their matchup against the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks with a lot of confidence, but ultimately fell short in a pitcher’s duel at Stromberg Stadium.

Competing against the best athletes from across the nation, senior Andrew Bartnett and sophomore Felicia Koerner of the Hopkins track & field team managed to bring home the hardware. Not only did the two earn All-American honors, which is awarded to the top seven finishers in each event, but Koerner and Barnett both finished among the top three athletes in the nation in their respective events.

A strong offensive start and a lockdown performance by the Jays gave the #19 ranked Hopkins women’s lacrosse team their seventh win of the season as they took down the Hofstra University Pride this past Saturday in Hempstead, New York.

Following a tremendous effort at last weekend’s MACFA and NIWFA Championships, the men’s and women’s fencing teams headed to Easton, Pa. on March 11 for the 2017 NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional.

The National League (NL) will be very competitive this year, as it seems top loaded with talent. There are some teams that are powerhouses all around, as well as teams that are very strong in some areas (New York Mets’ starting rotation) while lacking in others (New York Mets’ offense). In the end, it may come down to a question of whether the strengths of a team mask their weaknesses. However, come playoff time, the teams who are strong all around will shine.

Likewise, the NFL has a franchise tag, unlike the National Basketball Association (NBA), which prevents most talent on the level of LeBron James or Kevin Durant from hitting the open market on a consistent basis. The franchise tag largely prevents the drawn out free agency races that we have seen and grown accustomed to in the NBA.
