Ralph E. Moore Jr. is a Johns Hopkins alumnus, Class of ‘74. He is a columnist for the AFRO American newspaper and the chairman of the nonprofit group By Peaceful Means, an organization born in East Baltimore that teaches children about non-violence and positive conflict resolution.

My absolute favorite ‘first day of school' activity was drawing self-portraits. Nothing beats the freedom to scrub down crayons to the stub and draw your favorite outfits and accessories, all for the teacher to hang them up in the hallway.

Smrithi Upadhyayula, a senior at the University of Texas at Dallas, was already resigned to the fact that her email inbox would stay packed for the rest of her medical school application cycle. Every day, there seemed to be updates from one school or another about transcripts that needed to be updated or rec letters that needed to be resubmitted.

The University held a town hall meeting on Sept. 22 in Shriver Hall to hear community feedback on an initial draft of the Johns Hopkins Police Department (JHPD) Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The event was disrupted by protesters, forcing the school to move the town hall online.

The Ottawa Senators have signed 20-year-old center Tim Stützle to an eye-popping eight-year contract worth $66.8 million that will pay him $8.35 million per year and keep him with the Senators for the foreseeable future. Stützle, the number three overall pick in 2020, is coming off a 22-goal, 58-point season in which he scored at an impressive pace of over a point per game in his final 30 games of the year.

Baltimore is a city of neighborhoods, each with their own unique character and rich traditions. Tucked between Waverly and the Homewood campus, you’ll find the tight-knit, family-friendly community of Abell. For the past year and a half, I’ve had the privilege of being an Abell resident and participating in several of the neighborhood’s fun traditions, like the summer Porch Prom and the Abell Community Street Fair.

Recently, I have been faced with a heavy onset of self-doubt. The excitement that typically precedes the beginning of a new semester has been replaced with worry. Although I have always been somewhat of a worry-wart — the easily stressed out, Type A kind of person — this time my anxiety seems rooted in someplace entirely new.
