The Student Government Association (SGA) held its weekly meeting on April 5 in order to discuss a committee reorganization bill, the senior class Met Gala, renaming of buildings and programs named after Woodrow Wilson, an election day survey, SGA’s sponsorship of the Hopkins Student Organization for Programming’s (HOP) Picnic Day and the Sophomore Class Paint Night.

Hopkins admitted 1,586 students to the Class of 2026 through the Regular Decision (RD) admissions round on March 18. They follow the 821 students who were previously admitted to the University through this cycle’s two Early Decision rounds.

The senior class council held the senior Met Gala on April 2 in commemoration of their upcoming graduation. Seniors were able to choose between two types of tickets, photo and general admission, and could purchase one ticket for their attendance.

In an email sent to undergraduate students on April 6, the University reinstated several COVID-19 safety protocols in response to the rise in cases after spring break. Over 100 students have tested positive for COVID-19 since April 1, and the campus dashboard reported 64 confirmed cases on April 5 and 26 on April 6.

TEDxJHU held its Spring Main Event, titled “Amplified,” on April 2. The event hosted speakers from the Baltimore area, including activist Legacy Forte, neuroscientist David Linden, artist Hannah Brancato, author D. Watkins and educator Melanie Shimano. Hopkins hip-hop dance group SLAM performed, and the student-produced short film The People of Baltimore was presented during intermission.

The University announced last week that the Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Samantha Power will give the commencement speech for the Class of 2022 on May 22.

Elections for the Executive Board of the 2022-23 Student Government Association (SGA) include a single ticket and three independent candidates. For the third year, the Executive Board election will coincide with SGA class council elections. Voting begins on Monday, March 14 and runs through Thursday, March 17.

President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in an effort to force Ukraine into the Russian sphere of influence on Feb. 24, local time. Since Feb. 24, thousands in Ukraine have been killed and at least 2 million Ukrainians have fled their country.

Beginning March 19, the University’s guest policies for on-campus housing will extend to allow non-affiliate guests. This policy change comes after the lifting of other restrictions as a result of high vaccination and booster rates on campus.

In two email broadcasts sent to affiliates on Mar. 9, the University announced relaxations of the indoor masking policy for vaccinated affiliates and a spring break travel testing requirement. Effective immediately, masks are no longer required in administrative spaces, public events, research labs, athletic facilities, libraries, residence halls and other public nonclassroom communal spaces.

Hopkins affiliates and members of the Baltimore community held a vigil on the Beach in support of Ukraine on March 5. Holding sunflowers and flyers, the event organizers called on attendees to donate resources for the people of Ukraine.
