The beautiful Charles Street 12 is a 12-mile road race that runs from the Trader Joe’s in Towson down to the Under Armour headquarters in Federal Hill.

Last summer, while working with patients with Parkinson’s disease, I noticed one elderly patient who was incredibly nervous about her upcoming mobility test. Right before beginning her exam, she stared ahead at the large digital clock in the room. When she saw that the time was 12:14 p.m., she immediately relaxed her shoulders and let out a deep sigh. Tears gently welled up in her eyes as she became filled with emotion, radiating comfort and relief.

Football season is upon us! For all you diehard NFL followers, we survived the dog days of acting like anyone can win the World Series (it’s the Braves — it’s always been the Braves), lying to ourselves that we didn’t already know Anthony Edwards was good (like we needed to see him score 35 against Lithuania to know) and engaging obnoxious Premier League fans by sympathizing with their poor allocation of resources (of course they shouldn’t have signed Kai Havertz for 60 million!).

Search up Hopkins on any map and it will take you to the grassy knoll in front of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library that we Blue Jays lovingly call the Beach. On a sunny day, troves of students will flock there for picnics, a game of frisbee or some quiet reading. Nearby is the Daily Grind of Brody Learning Commons where students can purchase food and refreshments. And, if you want something more substantial, St. Paul Street has a plethora of restaurants for those sick of dining hall fare.

The Fall 2023 Student Involvement Fair (SIF) took place at the Ralph S. O’Connor Recreation Center (Rec Center) on Sept. 1. The event, hosted by the Leadership Engagement and Experiential Development (LEED) office, gave returning and incoming students the opportunity to get involved in student clubs and organizations at Hopkins.

Working this summer as an engineer for a company that automates tasks in warehouses, I found myself constantly explaining my job in conversation with fellow engineers, students and even strangers on the bus. For three months, I was an unwilling defender of the existence of artificial intelligence (AI) — an existence that, for many, seems to foreshadow a hostile takeover of the human race. These concerns, while hyperbolic, betray a deeper current of unrest surrounding the recent advances in public-facing AI. I believe that by looking at our past, engineers and automators can understand these concerns and plan for a not-so-distant, remarkably different future.

The 2023–2024 academic year has added new services for the student body. Hopkins Dining and Transportation Services announced changes to their operations that have elicited positive responses from students as well as constructive feedback.

As freshmen are adjusting to campus, so are we. For returning students, this isn’t the Hopkins we’ve always known (though that’s not necessarily a bad thing). With new physical changes and new policy changes, our ever-evolving campus looks a bit different this semester.

In light of the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruling against consideration of racial background in the college admissions process, the University sent a broadcast email to the Hopkins community on June 29. The broadcast denounced the ruling and affirmed the University’s continued commitment to diversity.

Do you remember move-in day? Do you remember the pit in your stomach and the daydreams you had as you stared from the car window envisioning the next four years? I remember sitting in the backseat texting my roommate “I'm close” as we passed the “Maryland Welcomes You!” sign. However, off the highway, my daydreams were disrupted by a sudden and violent shaking of the car. My mother began to swerve around an army of potholes that dotted the roads in what could have been a real-life Fast and Furious.

This past Saturday, I spent my night in the Ralph S. O'Connor Center for Recreation and Well-Being. Instead of smelling like sweat and disinfectant wipes, the Rec Center was filled with the White-Claw breath of hordes of Hopkins students after a day of dartying. We were all gathered (way too close together) on the basketball court to watch Kehlani, this year’s Spring Fair Concert headliner.

If one thing is certain when it comes to the arts community at Hopkins, it is each artist’s individual passion. Whether it’s the many theater groups, orchestras or underground coalitions of rock-loving musicians, the arts of our lady Homewood are alive and well. But is this hidden culture that courses through the student body recognized as much as it should be?
