As the student body began trickling onto campus for the spring semester on Saturday, the Hopkins wrestling team squared off against three Centennial Conference rivals in the biggest home match of the 2009-2010 season.
It's a Saturday night and Goldfarb Gymnasium is packed with fans, parents and alumni ready to welcome the beginning of the Hopkins wrestling season. The Black and Blue Brawl is traditionally the biggest event of the year for the team, yet it's a competition in which the team as a whole has no opponent.

The Hopkins men's lacrosse team stepped onto the rain-soaked field of M&T Bank Stadium last Saturday, intent on once again redeeming themselves from a downward slide and overcoming their age-old rivals, the Maryland Terrapins. The stage was set for the second annual "Day of Rivals" competition, a nationally broadcast event that pitted Army against Navy, followed by possibly the most famous collegiate lacrosse rivalry: Blue Jays vs. Terps. And the drenched fans of both teams couldn't have asked for a more exciting spectacle as Maryland and Hopkins remained neck-in-neck for the entirety of the contest. In the end, Hopkins prevailed for the third straight time, closing the game with a thrilling 10-9 finish, culminated in the closing seconds of regulation.
The men's and women's tennis teams both brought their overall season records to 3-3 this Saturday after making a trip to Pennsylvania to take on the Centennial Conference whipping boy Muhlenberg. It was relatively smooth sailing for both teams as both teams finished the day capping off twin 9-0 victories.
The Konica-Minolta Face-Off Classic, held this past Saturday at M & T Bank Stadium, has traditionally been a showcase for the dominant Hopkins men's lacrosse team. Last year, the Jays dominated the Princeton Tigers by a score of 14-9. This year there was a reversal of fate as the Tigers trounced the Jays to a final 14-8 finish. But the Jays rebounded on Tuesday, as they defeated UMBC 14-11.
The bleachers of Goldfarb Gymnasium were filled last Saturday as the Hopkins wrestling team squared off against Messiah College for their only home dual match of the season. Although Messiah is not a member of the Centennial Conference, they are a familiar foe as the host team of the Messiah and Petrofes Invitational Tournaments, in which the Jays competed earlier this season. While Messiah has proven to be an extremely tough opponent in these competitions, Assistant Coach James Gillispie mentioned before the match that the Falcons did not bring a significant amount of their starting line-up to Baltimore. This resulted in a gritty fight to the finish, with Messiah coming out on top in the end by a score of 23-17.
I don't think that I'm alone when I say that this year, the Super Bowl sucks. Thanksgiving may be the most homogeneous of all the major American holidays. Barring any bizarre family quirks, everyone mainly follows the same routine on Turkey Day. You stuff your face with a smorgasbord of turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and potatoes until intense abdominal pain forces you to unbutton the top button of your pants. You listen to Grandma tell you how proud she is of you. And at the end of the afternoon, you plop your fat, dumb and happy self on the couch and pass out watching the Detroit Lions lose another football game.
The Hopkins wrestling team did not open the season as strong as they would have liked. After more than a month of hard work and grueling practices, the team traveled to Messiah College to compete in the Messiah Invitational, their first tournament of the year. He looks back at the four years of competition, contemplating how he will be remembered in the program and reminiscing about the sport that has played an integral part in his collegiate career. Second, he thinks about this one last season, the final hoorah. Every athlete wants his senior year to be special. At the culmination of his four years of hard work and dedication, he wants that championship game in all its glory. For senior utility water polo player Peter Davis, these two aspects of the final season are fully integrated.
So far, this year's fantasy football season has been a jumble of surprises. Old faces have fallen, new faces have risen, and if you want to keep up and secure your cash winnings, bucket of chicken, tin foil trophy or whatever it is you play for, you need to throw your previous knowledge and convictions out the window, and get in the game.
The opening weeks of the Hopkins fall sports season leaves little time for the stellar Blue Jay athletes to make their marks. This week in sports certainly had its high points, but who knows how the season will unfold? Who knows which stars will rise on the football field or the volleyball court in the upcoming months? While Hopkins athletes struggle for individual or team glories in their respective sports, this week's Athlete of the Week fought for something else. John Lippe fought to survive.
I sat in the nosebleeds of the parents' section at Homewood Field this weekend, watching what I consider to be one the greatest rivalries in the sport of college lacrosse: Hopkins vs. Maryland. The stands were packed on both sides, and the fences surrounding the field were lined with fans of both schools, peering over the side to catch each moment. TV cameras zoomed in on the field. The roar of chants, shouts, insults and pounding boom sticks permeated the air. It was a scene that made me proud to go to Hopkins, one of the rare moments when late-night library sessions and academic pressures seemed to take a backseat.
