Our athletes had a busy week, winning games and titles across the board.

This past week was a busy one for our in-season athletes, with competitions both at home and away. Let’s take a look at our teams’ results, and what is coming up in the next week!

Women’s Track and Field @ the Tufts National Qualifier and South Regional Qualifier

The women’s track team had successful outings at the Tufts National Qualifier and the South Regional Qualifier. At the Tufts event, our team won first place in the Women’s Distance Medley Relay with a time of 11:44.55, which should guarantee them a spot in the NCAA Division III Championship. For the women’s mile, junior Mackenzie Setton and senior Harrinee Senthilkumar have also qualified for the Championship, with times of 4:55.23 and 4:57.25.

At the South Regional Qualifier in Winchester, Va., two of our Hopkins athletes also earned a qualification to the NCAA Division III Championships. In the women’s weight-throw event, junior Erika Ezumba hit a new career-best record for the second time in two weeks, reaching 17.33 meters in her final throw. At the pole-vaulting event, freshman Clarissa Newman broke her own freshman record by clearing 3.75, improving that in a later jump to 3.81m.

Our athletes will be back in action next week in the Division III NCAA Championships in Rochester, N.Y. on March 14 and 15.

Men’s Lacrosse: L (13-10)

Hopkins Men’s Lacrosse fell to Syracuse University this Sunday at the JMA Wireless Dome. The first quarter saw an intense battle between the Jays and the Orange. Each team had four goals, as sophomores Hunter Chauvette, Chuck Rawson and Charlie Iler, as well as junior Matt Collison, found the back of the net. Hopkins then outscored Syracuse in the second quarter, with goals by Iler and senior Stuart Phillips. During the two remaining quarters, Hopkins scored a combined four goals to Syracuse’s eight, for a final score of 13-10. Men’s Lacrosse is now at a 5-2 record for the season.

Our team will be back in action this upcoming Saturday, March 15, as they take on the Navy Midshipmen starting at 7 p.m in Annapolis.

Women’s Basketball: W (68-58)

Our women’s basketball athletes had an incredible weekend as they pushed past the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Tartans to advance into the Round of 16 in the NCAA Championships. After a strong first quarter performance, which saw the Jays outscore the Tartans 16-4, Carnegie Mellon pushed back with a convincing 24 points in the second quarter, raising the score to 28-25 at half-time. Nevertheless, our athletes powered through the final two quarters, tallying up an impressive 43 points to CMU’s 30, for a final score of 68-58.

The Hopkins Women’s Basketball team will now face their Round-of-16 opponent, the University of Scranton Royals, on Friday March 14, at 8 p.m. EDT. Live-streaming of the match is available through the NCAA website, via this link

Men’s Fencing: MACFA Championships

Although this year’s Super Bowl ended without a third consecutive championship for the Kansas City Chiefs, our men’s fencing team did what Pat Mahomes and Co. could not by clinching a three-peat in the Men’s Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association. The Jays also brought the sabre and foil titles back to the nest, as well as several individual honors and titles.

In the squad competitions, Hopkins had an impressive drive in the sabre competition, going 35-1 to win their third consecutive title in this modality. The foil team also put forth an outstanding title challenge, going 29-7 to also win their third consecutive title. In the individual titles. Senior Alan Zheng claimed his second career foil title after going 4-0 in the individual championship, while graduate student Sam Roberts won the sabre title
