The Student Government Association (SGA) reviewed a bill for a Club Colombia Hopkins soccer tournament and passed a funding bill for a Feb. 22 speed dating event.

On Tuesday, Feb. 4 the Student Government Association (SGA) convened for its weekly meeting. Members discussed a potential Board of Committee Chairs Initiative, reviewed a first reading of the Club Colombia bill and passed a Speed Dating funding bill.

The meeting began with brief announcements from the executive board. President Stone Meng celebrated the success of the recent SGA summit, while Programming Chair Tim Huang announced dates for the upcoming class formals — March 1 (sophomore), March 28 (junior) and April 12 (freshman).

The meeting transitioned to a presentation by Senator Daarian Rouhani, who proposed a Board of Committee Chairs initiative, in which, during biweekly meetings, committee chairs would discuss upcoming initiatives and increase transparency between them. He cited a lack of transparency in the current SGA administration as the driving force behind this proposition. SGA reviewed this proposition. Some suggested that biweekly check-ins would take up unnecessary time; others supported the initiative as it stands.

Club Colombia members Sarah Marquez and Catalina Hernandez Valencia then presented a bill for their organization, sponsored by Senator Cynthia Sanchez Hidalgo, which requests $1400 to fund supplies for a Hopkins-wide soccer tournament, designed to promote the organization and raise funds for Colombian non profits. The bill was transferred to the finance committee. President of the Senate Naqvi then presented a bill for the AhlulBayt Student Association Ice Skating Social, which requests $232 in funds to support this initiative.

The meeting concluded with a second reading of the Speed Dating Bill by Chair Tim Huang, a bill that outlines the plans for SGA’s upcoming Speed Dating event on Feb. 21. Members discussed logistics for the event, which is currently structured in the great hall around tables, in which seating will be guided by ‘matchmakers’ and pairs will be randomized in each four-minute session. While the structure and content of the event have not been confirmed, SGA unanimously passed its funding bill, which requests $516 in total.
