The Blue Jay athletes had an incredible weekend with overtime goals, broken program records and more.

Hello readers, welcome to this week’s edition of Hopkins Sports in review! Come and join us as we take a look at some of the results from our athletic teams across the board this week.

Men’s Lacrosse: W (9-8)

Winning may feel good enough, but a come-from-behind win feels even better. If that game-winner is scored within the final minute of the game, that is a feeling like no other.

The men’s lacrosse team played a closely contested game last Saturday, Feb. 15 against the Loyola University Maryland Greyhounds. The Greyhounds led the first quarter by 2-1, the Blue Jays pulled it even by the second to 3-3, followed by multiple turnovers that ended the third quarter 7-7.

While the Greyhounds broke the tie by making it onto the scoreboard nine minutes into the final quarter, junior Matt Collison scored an unassisted game-tying goal with 79 seconds remaining. Senior Russell Melendez’s extra-man goal secured the Blue Jays victory, ending the match 9-8.

Despite the unfavorable weather — the mixture of snow and sleet making the field extra slippery — the Blue Jays achieved their ninth straight win on the road with this game. The men’s lacrosse team will meet their next adversary at Homewood Field on Saturday Feb. 22 as they play the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in a bid to continue their winning record.

Womens Basketball: W (64-50), W (65-44)

This winter has been a great season for the women’s basketball team. The Blue Jays asserted their dominance in both games this week against McDaniel College and Franklin & Marshall College.

Hopkins jumped out early against McDaniel on Wednesday, Feb. 12, leading the Green Terrors by more than 20 points halfway into the game. While the Terrors attempted to come back in the third and fourth quarters, it was far too little and late.

On Saturday, the Blue Jays never gave the lead to the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats in any of the four quarters, easily claiming their 11th win in a row. Senior Michaela O’Neil was the top-scorer in the match with 19 points as well as three rebounds.

Be sure to attend the next game on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Goldfarb Gym against Dickinson College. Seniors will be honored prior to the match.

Men’s Track and Field

The men’s track team attended the David Hemery Invitational at Boston University on Friday, Feb. 14. The Blue Jays had a memorable, sweet day — not only because it was Valentine’s day — but thanks to the record-breaking performances across the board.

Early on in the competition, sophomore Spencer Ye ran 49.08 seconds in the 400-meter, breaking the eight-year long program record. Junior Emmanuel Leblond replaced his personal and the school record in the 3,000-meter with 7:57.85 minutes: the fourth-fastest time in Division III history. The team was also brilliant in the 4x400-meter relay, with sophomore Alex Colletti, Ye, and juniors Josh Lee and Fisayo Omonije running 3:18.52, taking down the 10-year-old program record.

In the afternoon, graduate student Lucas Rackers broke the 1-mile run Hopkins record by clocking in at 4:05.39. The Jays also placed third in the 200-meter dash with Colletti now owning the three fastest times in program history.

Womens Lacrosse: W (12-11)

The women’s lacrosse team celebrated their first victory of the 2025 season on Saturday, Feb. 15, as they faced Duke University at Homewood Field. The Jays defeated the Blue Devils in a tight match, powering through overtime to break the 11-11 tie.

Hopkins had a strong start, scoring seven goals straight in the opening quarter. While the turnover in the fourth quarter forced the overtime, senior Ashley Mackin scored the winning goal and helped the Blue Jays grab a crucial victory.

Mackin stole the show, making this her second straight five-goal game and tying her career high with seven points. This was also a multi-point match for junior Ava Angello with four points and her first hat trick of the season. Sophomore Lacey Downey had three assists and four points: her career-high performance.

Look out as the Blue Jays venture to Loyola University Maryland on Tuesday, Feb. 18, as well as take on the University of Pennsylvania at home on Saturday, Feb. 22!
