The Student Government Association (SGA) convened for their first meeting of the spring semester. Members reviewed plans for the upcoming Student Involvement Fair (SIF) and discussed semester goals, construction updates and a Valentine’s Day Tabling event on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
The meeting began with a review of SGA’s plans for SIF, led by Chair Tim Huang. Members discussed ways to increase student involvement with the association, including a renewed emphasis on increasing the number of candidates in upcoming elections. They then transitioned to a discussion of SGA initiatives. Members proposed various goals for the semester, including the expansion of access to athletic trainers for students in club sports, healthier drink options at CharMar, the incorporation of charging stations in the Brody and Gilman reading rooms, lecture hall renovations, support groups and student service committees.
President Stone Meng then presented an update on the construction of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library. Meng and Huang drafted a written proposal, sent to Associate Vice Provost for Student Engagement Brittini Brown and Vice Provost for Student Affairs Rachelle Hernandez, to increase support for students as construction progresses. The proposal draws on the requests of SGA’s previous school-wide email regarding construction. Rather than requesting a reduction in student tuition as was initially suggested, this proposal instead advocates for improved transportation around campus, an expansion of social study spaces and a list of general accommodations for the student body. The proposal remains open to revisions and suggestions. President Ronald J. Daniels expressed willingness to provide funding for its requests.
The meeting concluded with a vote on the second reading of a bill proposing a Valentine’s Day Tabling event for SGA, discussing the purchase and distribution of flowers and other Valentine-themed activities to promote student engagement with the association. The bill passed.
