Our Blue Jay athletes had an amazing week -- women’s soccer beat both Pennsylvania State Harrisburg and Haverford College.

Hopkins Athletics was in action this past week as several of our teams traveled to meet their opponents in the Centennial Conference, delivering impressive performances both individually and as a group. Check out some of our game summaries!

Women’s Soccer: W(4-0), W(2-1)

Our women’s soccer team athletes had an amazing week, securing decisive victories over Pennsylvania State Harrisburg and Haverford College. On Wednesday, Oct. 23, our athletes took on the Penn State Nittany Lions at home — two shots in the opening 10 minutes of the first half helped the Jays gain an early lead, with junior Megha Salvi and senior Katie Sullivan both finding the back of the net. The Jays roared back into action in the second half, scoring an additional two goals in under three minutes, as Sullivan scored off of a cross, bagging a brace to reach a total of 11 goals this season so far. Shortly after, junior Maria Romo-Nichols scored one from the penalty spot after our team was awarded a penalty due to a handball by the Lions.

The team was busy again on Saturday, traveling to Haverford, Pa., to face off against the Haverford Black Squirrels. Despite conceding a goal around the second-minute mark, the Jays were once again victorious, courtesy of goals by freshman Carolyn Johnson and graduate student Carrie McIntire. It was once again an insanely quick and deadly rally by our athletes, as they managed to pull ahead in the game by scoring twice in less than a minute.

Women’s Volleyball: W(3-0), W(3-0)

Women’s volleyball continued their incredible season record with two 3-0 shutout wins against Washington College and Bryn Mawr College. On Wednesday Oct. 23, our team made the trip to Chestertown, Md., to face off against the Washington College Shorewomen. The Jays won all three sets with a comfortable margin (25-16, 25-18 and 25-16), totaling 42 kills, ten aces and nine blocks. Additionally, Hopkins also achieved a hitting percentage of over .400 for the fourth time in this season. Shoutout to junior Simone Adam and graduate student Jilienne Widener for their combined 19 kills!

Later that week, the Jays were once again on the road, traveling to Pennsylvania for their game against the Bryn Mawr Owls. Once again, our athletes won in three straight sets (25-10, 25-9, 25-16), taking our season record to 22-2 and our record in the Centennial Conference to 6-0. The team had an incredible outing, combining for a hitting percentage of .525, our highest in the season. Shoutout to setters freshman Annika Anderson and graduate student Kate Danaher for their 14 and 12 assists, respectively.

Men’s Football: W(16-7)

The Hopkins football team beat the Ursinus College Grizzly Bears this weekend in Collegeville, Pa., ending the Grizzly Bear’s unbeaten run that had carried over from their conference in the last season. Despite falling 0-7 in the first quarter, the Jays pulled back in the second and third quarters, scoring 16 points while holding the Grizzly Bears to 0. Both our offensive and defensive lines were instrumental to the victory — shoutout to senior defensive back PJ Penders, senior linebacker Cole Peters and senior defensive line Matthew Konkol for their combined 24 tackles.

Individual Centennial Conference Honors

Four of our athletes picked up Athlete of the Week honors in the Centennial Conference last week. Junior Emmanuel Leblond received the award for the fourth time this season for men’s cross country, while junior Adriana Catalano was the recipient of the women’s cross country award for the first time this season. In addition, two of our athletes in men’s soccer received conference honors — senior forward Will Sangpachatanaruk picked up the offensive player of the week award for his protagonism in the team’s win over Franklin & Marshall College, while sophomore goalkeeper Simon Turner won the defensive players honors for his performance in the same game.
