Hello Hopkins faithfuls! Welcome to another week of Hopkins Sports in Review! Here’s the latest on fall sports as conference play continues and the playoffs approach.

Football: W(136)

On Oct. 19th, Hopkins football stayed hot after last week’s victory over Gettysburg College with a tough-fought 13–6 win over the Franklin and Marshall College (F&M) Diplomats, bringing their record to 5–1 on the year. The Blue Jays won this game on defense, holding F&M to only two field goals and forcing three turnovers. Senior defensive lineman Matthew Konkol led the way with eight tackles, including two sacks, and a forced fumble. Graduate student defensive back Luca Lutzel and senior defensive back Jake Spivak both hauled in an interception each in a stifling performance by the Hopkins defense.

On the offensive side, the Blue Jays did not get much going but found enough to win, with senior quarterback James Rinello rushing for the game’s only touchdown and freshman kicker Brad Paxton converting both field goal attempts.

Hopkins football will continue conference play in their upcoming matchup at Ursinus College on Oct. 26 at 1 pm.

Women’s Volleyball: W(30), W(30)

Hopkins women’s volleyball extended their win streak to ten games on Oct. 19th with a pair of victories over Centennial Conference foe Haverford College and non-conference opponent Carnegie Mellon University.

The victory over Haverford was in dominating fashion as the Blue Jays won in straight sets. Junior outside hitter Simone Adam led the way with 13 kills, while junior setter Helena Swaak led the team in both assists (16) and digs (13).

It was more of the same against Carnegie Mellon as the Blue Jays dominated en route to another victory in straight sets. This time, it was graduate student outside hitter Jilienne Widener who led the way with 13 kills and four blocks, while graduate student setter Kate Danaher racked up 22 assists and 13 digs.

The #3 ranked Blue Jays will look to continue their success against conference opponent Washington College on Oct. 23.

Field Hockey: W(51), W(40)

Hopkins field hockey maintained its chokehold on the Centennial Conference with victories over Washington College and #10-ranked Bryn Mawr College.

The Blue Jays jumped ahead of Washington College early, scoring in the first quarter and holding a 3–1 lead at the half. It was more of the same in the second half as Hopkins piled on two more goals in the fourth quarter to win with a healthy 5–1 cushion.

#4 ranked Hopkins met #10 ranked in Bryn Mawr on October 19th in a marquee matchup between ranked opponents. Domination ensued as the Blue Jays convincingly defeated Bryn Mawr 4-0. The Hopkins defense was staunch as Bryn Mawr was held to only three shots on goal, while the Blue Jays managed 13. Graduate student midfielder Lila Slattery led the way with two goals in an all-around dominant performance.

The Blue Jays will be at home for their next matchup on Saturday, Oct. 26, against conference opponent Swarthmore College.

Men’s Soccer: W (21)

Over the weekend, the Blue Jays bounced back with a key ranked win over #13 Franklin and Marshall. Coming off a disappointing loss to conference opponent Gettysburg College and a tie against Salisbury University in their last two matches, this was a big win to get back on the right track.

Hopkins scored a goal in each half. In the first half, it was graduate student forward Jack Mendrysa who slotted away the opening goal to the back post off a cross. In the second half, it was senior forward Will Sangpachatanaruk’s turn, finding the back of the net with his left foot to give the Blue Jays the lead.

Sophomore goalkeeper Simon Turner was the star of the game, saving nine shots, including one in the final minute, to secure a Hopkins victory.

The Blue Jays are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 23, hosting Washington College at 7 p.m.
