New York is often recognized for its iconic skyline and bustling streets, but as someone who’s lived here my whole life, I’ve come to appreciate its B-sides — serene natural landscapes perfect for a breath of fresh air, and charming small towns filled with boutique shops and local flavor. Lake Placid is one such hidden gem. This lovely town has long been on my must-share list. Read on for a glimpse into my personal experiences as I explore a different side of New York that’s scenic and close-knit.
Plan A: A fitness retreat immersed in nature and winter sports
If you're looking for a spot to go snowboarding or skiing with family and friends, Lake Placid is ideal.
When I visit, I usually start my day with a 12- to 15-minute drive (depending on where I’m staying) to Whiteface Mountain. With 94 trails and three peaks, the mountain has something for everyone, from beginner-friendly slopes to extremely challenging double-black diamond runs. I like to arrive right when it opens so I can enjoy the fresh, powdery snow before the crowds arrive around 10 a.m. After a few hours, I take a break in one of the cozy cafeterias. If the conditions aren't too icy, I take the ski lift to the summit for one of the most breathtaking views you'll ever see. Whiteface Mountain is one of the tallest in the Adirondacks, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and towns. Before heading out, I always treat myself to a Belgian waffle with chocolate syrup from the Waffle Cabin at the Base Lodge — it’s a tradition!
If skiing or snowboarding isn’t your thing, Lake Placid is also perfect for ice skating. You can choose between the indoor Olympic Center rink, the outdoor Olympic Oval or even skating on Mirror Lake in the heart of town. Starting the day after Christmas, you can also try dog sledding on Mirror Lake four days a week. If the lake is frozen solid, it's a fun way to enjoy the winter wonderland and take in the 360-degree view of the snow-covered village.
Plan B: A relaxing stroll to absorb the town’s charm
Lake Placid offers more than just nature and sports. If you’re in the mood for a relaxing stroll through the village, there are endless places to can keep you occupied. For the shopaholics out there, some of my favorite places are Critters (clothing/gift shop), Pure Placid (lotions, soaps, candles, etc.) and Sparkle (jewelry store). You can buy yourself a comfy Lake Placid sweatshirt, bear-patterned pajama pants or random trinkets for your home. All of these are small businesses, with mostly handmade products that are great quality: I have sweatshirts that are nearly five years old and still look brand new! Nonetheless, these merely scratch the surface of the numerous shops that have nearly everything you could possibly want or need.
My favorite activity for getting some extra steps is walking the scenic 2.7-mile loop around Mirror Lake. This stroll allows me to experience the animated village Main Street while also the quieter roads behind the unique houses overlooking the lake. For a little detour, sometimes I like to take a short hidden pathway through the forest to a small opening overlooking the lake or sit on one of the Adirondack chairs along the road and relax.
After this walk, I usually feel pretty hungry and like to go to some of my favorite dining spots, all within one mile of each other! If I’m feeling American cuisine, I like to go to Lake Placid Pub & Brewery and Upstairs Grill. For some great pizza and pasta, my go-to is Luna Restaurant, but be sure to make a reservation because it’s always fully booked! Some other favorites include Smoke Signals and Mito Japanese Steakhouse for some amazing sushi. If you’re not feeling very hungry and just want to grab a quick bite, Adirondack Popcorn Company is the place for you, with over ten different popcorn flavors ranging from savory to sweet, and of course, the classic Ben & Jerry’s.

I’ve explored many upstate towns throughout my years in New York, but Lake Placid has a charm that is unparalleled. This whole town brings you the feeling of sitting in a warm and cozy room by the fireplace, surrounded by the aroma of rustic pine and hot chocolate — which I think we can all agree is among the most comforting feelings. I hope this piece encourages you to take a detour to one of the Northeast’s prettiest towns, a place everyone should get to visit at least once in their life!
