The 112th Student Government Association (SGA) convened on Tuesday, Sept. 3 for their weekly meeting.
The session, led by President of the Senate Nasreen Naqvi, began with discussion regarding non-legislative business. Krieger School of Arts and Sciences Senator Daarian Rouhani presented his initiative to begin peer-led team learning (PILOT) sessions for General Biology students, as there is currently no PILOT sections for General Biology I or II. This was followed by a question and answer session by senators regarding Rouhani’s plan on how to implement this.
Senator Srigouri Oruganty then made announcements regarding Well-Being Day, an event organized by the SGA in collaboration with Health Promotion and Well-Being. Well-Being Day will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 11, and activities — such as yoga, planting and art activities — are scheduled throughout the day at various campus locations.
After a brief recess, Phi Delta Theta representative Maahi Ameer presented a bill to fund Phi Delta Theta’s Crab Fest. The ticketed event will allow attendees to feast on all-you can-eat blue crabs and fried chicken for $20. Proceeds from the event will go towards Live Like Lou, a philanthropic organization dedicated to fighting amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and supporting families affected by the condition. Money will also be donated to the Packard Center, a prominent ALS research institute at Hopkins. Last year, Phi Delta Theta was able to donate $6,000 to the organization. The bill passed after a unanimous vote. The event is currently scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28 at 3:30 pm.
Finally, Chair of Programming Tim Huang presented a bill for funding the SGA Fall Retreat, a trip for all SGA members to attend.
