The 112th Student Government Association (SGA) convened on Tuesday, Sept. 17 for their weekly meeting.
The president of the senate Nasreen Naqvi led the session. The meeting started with cabinet reports, where there were no significant updates. In non-legislative business, Naqvi asked the committee to fill out a survey from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Agora Institute on student sentiment about election and democracy.
Naqvi passed the mic to Senator Nayshawn Ferebee for first reading, who briefly introduced the October Tabling Funding Bill, which aims to fund Halloween-themed snacks and crafts to increase SGA awareness of events and accessibility issues. Then, Senator Jazzlyn Fernandez presented the SGA Leadership Workshop bill.
“In order to be more apparent with the community on what we're all about as well as to educate them about leadership, it was recommended that we do something like a leadership workshop,” Fernandez said.
Both bills passed without discussion.
Three bills were presented for second reading: the Johns Hopkins University Muslim Association Barbecue Bill (also known as the JHUMA BBQ Bill), the Attendance Amendment, and the Committee on Student Elections amendment bill. Most discussion revolved around reforming the current attendance policy for the meetings, where the senate discussed the necessity of impeachment trials.
