Our athletes had a busy and impressive weekend: Women’s soccer beat Muhlenberg College by a score of 4–0.

Hi everyone, and welcome to Hopkins Sports in Review! This week was a busy one for Hopkins sports as several of our teams returned to competition.

Women’s Soccer: D(1–1), W(4–0)

Our women’s soccer athletes had a busy week with two games against The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) and Muhlenberg College (Muhlenberg), respectively. Wednesday’s game against TCNJ — held at Homewood Field — started off with an advantage to the Jays as sophomore Ava Venuti scored a header in the 44th minute. The assist was made by graduate student Olivia Redden who now has two goal contributions so far this season. TCNJ brought the game to a draw as the Lions scored around the 79-minute mark. Despite a combined 16 shots on goal with nine of them by our team, the game finished as a tie.

Later that week, in the opening game of the Centennial Conference, our athletes traveled to Muhlenberg to take on the Mules and walked away with an impressive 4–0 win. The Jays made it 2–0 early on in the first half of the game, as junior Megha Salvi and graduate student Carrie McIntire scored within four minutes of each other. The Jays had an immensely impressive first half, firing 24 shots on goal to Muhlenberg’s zero. After picking up two assists in the first half, senior Katie Sullivan scored the third goal of the match and her third goal overall this season in the 59th minute. A late goal from senior Katia Chiampas brought the score up to 4–0. Our team will bring the competition home to Homewood Field this Saturday, Sept. 28th as they take on Ursinus College at 6 p.m.!

Men’s Soccer: D(0–0)

Men’s soccer took on Muhlenberg this past Saturday in Allentown, Pa. in our team’s opening game this Centennial Conference season. The game finished as a nil-nil draw despite seven shots and three shots on goal for Hopkins. Our team had two chances to open the scoring in the first half — one by graduate student Aidan Dunphy and the other by freshman Jason Pan — but they were both kept out by goalkeeper Ben Mulford and a strong Muhlenberg defense. Hopkins had another chance in the second half — courtesy of junior Scotty Coleman — but it was once again blocked. Shoutout to the Hopkins goalkeeper, graduate student Loucas Costeas, for saving Muhlenberg’s three shots on goal!

Keep an eye out for men’s soccer as they return to action against Ursinus College this Saturday, Sept. 28th on Homewood Field at 3PM.

Women’s Cross Country at the Haverford Main Line Invitational and the John McNichols Invitational

Our team traveled to Haverford, Pa. this Friday to compete in Haverford College’s Main Line Invitational, taking part in the women’s 5,000-meter event. It was a great second meet of the season for our Blue Jay athletes, as freshman Kayla Ritzman and senior Natasha Lewis finished in the top 50.

It was a busy weekend, as the team then departed to Indiana to compete in the Indiana State University John McNichols Invitational. The results were immensely impressive. Three of our runners — freshman Carter Brotherton and graduate students Emma Puetz and Triya Roy all finished in the top 15 amongst non-Division I runners in the women’s 6,000-meter event. Overall, Hopkins finished fourth amongst non-Division I schools, beating several top-ranked programs. Shoutout to freshman Carter Brotherthon for winning this week’s Centennial Conference honors in women’s cross country!

Men’s Cross Country at the Haverford Main Line Invitational and the John McNichols Invitational

Our men’s cross country athletes also participated in the Haverford and John McNichols Invitationals. The team finished fifth overall in Haverford, beating top-ranked programs like Temple (Division I) after two top-25 finishes in the men’s six-miles event by freshman Anirudh Krishnan and graduate student Aiden Tomov. Freshman Dane Spahr and sophomore Joey Souverein were next — finishing 35th and 51st!

In Indiana, our team finished fourth overall amongst non-Division I programs, as junior Emmanuel Leblond took fourth place in the men’s 8,000-meter event. Graduate student Lucas Rackers also had a great weekend — gaining 50 places in the second half of the race to cross the finish line as the 27th non-Division I athlete. Shoutout to junior Emmanuel Leblond for winning this week’s Centennial Conference honors in men’s cross country for the second time this season!

Both our men’s and women’s cross country teams will return to competition on Oct. 5 at the Paul Short Invitational in Pa. Good luck to our Jays!
