For the third season in a row, the field hockey Centennial Conference crown belongs to the Blue Jays. The three-peat came this past weekend when Hopkins blanked the Dickinson College Red Devils 5-0.
Currently at an unbelievable record of 19-0, the Jays have shown their dominance all season long and look to continue doing so in the NCAA Tournament.
This week’s Athlete of the Week is junior defender Olivia Fox, who netted a goal and assist in the Centennial Conference Championship win and has been a key contributor to the team’s success this season.
The News-Letter spoke with Fox earlier this week.
The News-Letter: Having scored a goal and tallied an assist in the Centennial Conference Championship game, what do you think was clicking for or around you to perform so well on that stage?
Olivia Fox: Going into this championship game I felt like my team and I were prepared to come out strong from the beginning. The energy and focus of the team was amazing and that really pushed me to want to perform well and do whatever I could for the team.
N-L: Amid all the coverage of the team going undefeated and having won its third straight Centennial Championship, what is an underrated aspect of this team?
OF: I think an underrated aspect of this team is how much we have adapted and grown this season since coming back from almost a year off because of the pandemic. While we have very experienced senior players that are consistent, I think our freshmen, sophomores and juniors have really stepped up to make an impact and make up for the lost time.
N-L: How will the team look to carry its momentum through the NCAA Tournament?
OF: We are so excited to be continuing into the NCAA Tournament, especially being able to host the [second]-round games this weekend. It’s really special to be a part of a team with so much determination, drive and grit which will be crucial in the NCAA Tournament. The energy on this team is unmatched, and I'm confident that we can carry that all the way to the championship game.
