First of all, there’s the ambience. Really, it’s just a lovely place to be. It’s somewhat dimly lit, especially at night, in that nice way that makes it feel warm and homey. The restaurant is relatively small, which also contributes to the setting’s coziness, although it’s not so small that you ever feel like neighboring tables are too close to you. There are these really cute string lights all across the ceiling with white and green coverings that are calming and non-abrasive and add to the comforting and welcoming atmosphere. The wait staff is always really friendly and warm, and they always make an effort to make sure you have everything you need.
Now on to the most important part: the food. The food is actually amazing. My favorite part is that it’s all gluten-free.
Seriously, all of it. That means that there shouldn’t be any risk of cross-contamination there, which is a godsend to people with serious sensitivities and Celiac’s disease. They even offer gluten-free pizza (although I haven’t seen that on the menu recently).
When it comes to other food allergies they are also very accommodating. If you need to get something dairy-free, nut-free, whatever, just ask and they’ll do their best to make sure you are able to eat what you want. They also offer numerous vegan and vegetarian options. The dishes are all delicious and not things that you can typically order anywhere.
It’s a multicultural restaurant, and much of the food is of Indian or Pakistani origin. There are so many wonderful options that there’s something for everyone! My personal favorite dish is the salmon, which comes served on top of fried plantains (it’s addictive).
Sweet 27 also has an attached bakery that has delicious baked goods and, believe it or not, they’re all gluten-free as well!
And they’re the kind of gluten-free that everyone can appreciate, not some poor processed attempt at imitating a dessert food that doesn’t quite hit the mark. The cupcakes in particular are my favorite (although I can no longer eat them because I have to limit my sugar intake unfortunately). Each cupcake is pretty big and they come in unique flavors. Plus, they’re nice to look at.
More good news about Sweet 27 is that, though it isn’t cheap, it is by no means the most unreasonably priced around. It’s a nice place with quality food for a reasonable price and it’s nearby! Right over on Howard and 27th street (hence, the name). If you haven’t been there yet, you should check it out. It’s worth it!
