University pledges $10 million to community projects

By ASHLEY EMERY | December 6, 2012

This morning, President Ronald J. Daniels announced that the University will invest $10 million over the next five years to strengthen and invigorate the neighboring communities surrounding the Homewood campus.

“The interests of our neighbors – safe streets, the elimination of blighted properties, and development of the local workforce – are also the interests of our university,” Daniels said when announcing the commitment. “After all, the future of Johns Hopkins is inextricably tied to that of its community, and we are deeply and purposefully committed to Baltimore’s success.”

The funds will be allocated for different projects that the University selects in conjunction with the neighborhoods themselves as well as members of the Homewood Community Partners Initiative.

Executive Director of Communications and Public Affairs Dennis O’Shea explained that the initiative will improve the community in different areas, such as commercial development, jobs, quality of life and economic inclusion.

The University aims to garner additional funding for these purposes.

“This $10 million is a starting point, and we will be urging others- other businesses, foundations, institutions and individuals- to invest in this initiative and join us,” O’Shea said.
